What is QSITE – Queensland Society for Information Technology in Education

Technology has become an integral part of education, and teachers often look for guidance and a sense of community to navigate this evolving landscape. In Queensland, one organisation has been at the forefront of this effort for decades: the Queensland Society for Information Technology in Education, better known as QSITE.

This statewide professional association is a voluntary network of educators and schools who share ideas, pool resources, and promote best practice in technology-enhanced curriculum development. In essence, it’s a community of educators dedicated to improving teaching and learning through ICT.

Below, we provide an overview of QSITE’s mission, activities, and its impact on Queensland education.

QSITE’s Mission and Objectives

QSITE has been supporting educators in their use of information and communication technologies (ICT) for teaching and administration since the 1980s. QSITE’s core mission is to build and nurture a positive, confident community of teachers at all levels, with support for continual improvement and leadership in curriculum and professional development

Through state-wide learning communities and professional networks, QSITE members strive to:

  • Engage students and educators in lifelong learning
  • Share ICT challenges, achievements and experiences
  • Connect with colleagues for collaboration and learning
  • Lead ICT education and integration in Queensland

These four pillars – Engage, Share, Connect, Lead – encapsulate QSITE’s objectives. QSITE’s motto captures this spirit as well: “educators of today, creating tomorrow.”

By uniting educators under these common goals, QSITE provides the sense of purpose and “fuel” that help teachers drive ongoing change in digital learning.

QSITE’s Key Activities and Programmes

To achieve its mission, QSITE engages in a variety of activities and offers programmes that support educators across the state. Some of its key activities include:

Professional Learning Events

QSITE hosts an annual state-wide conference as well as regular regional chapter events for educators. These gatherings allow teachers to network, share classroom experiences, and learn about new educational technologies. The organisation also runs virtual events and online forums so that educators can connect and learn from anywhere in Queensland!

Publications and Resources

Keeping up with rapid technological changes in education can be challenging, so QSITE provides publications to inform and inspire its members. Notably, it produces a journal called QUICK and shards content through Australian Educational Computing, a former national journal, helping members stay up-to-date and showcase their ICT achievements

These resources highlight effective practices and celebrate innovative projects happening in Queensland schools.

Professional Development Opportunities

Supporting teachers’ professional growth is a major part of QSITE’s work. The association facilitates workshops and training sessions that help educators build their digital skills and integrate ICT into the curriculum. Educators can even request QSITE to host professional development sessions at their own school on specific topics of interest

Members also benefit from openly accessible email discussion lists, post-workshop support, and discounts on registration fees for ICT conferences and events. This ensures that professional learning is ongoing and tailored to teachers’ needs.

Student Enrichment Programmes

QSITE recognises that supporting teachers goes hand-in-hand with creating opportunities for students. One example is the QSITE Student Design Challenge, which encourages students to apply their tech skills in creative projects and competitions

By running such student-focused events, QSITE helps teachers engage their learners in ICT and showcases student innovation in the broader community.

Awards and Recognition

To promote excellence, QSITE shines a spotlight on outstanding practitioners in the field of ICT education. Each year, the organisation presents Teacher and Leadership Awards to recognise educators who have made significant contributions or shown innovative practice with technology.

QSITE also invites members to publicly showcase successful ICT integration projects from their schools. Leading teachers and schools are profiled on the QSITE website and in its publications, highlighting local success stories and inspiring others.

Partnerships and Affiliations

QSITE extends its impact through strategic partnerships. It maintains affiliations with national and international bodies, giving members access to broader communities and resources. For instance, QSITE members automatically become associate members of the Australian Council for Computers in Education (ACCE), connecting Queensland educators to a nationwide network of ICT professionals.

Likewise, QSITE’s link with the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) provides members discounts on ISTE resources and access to global forums. The society also collaborates with industry partners to bring real-world technology insights into schools – offering hands-on projects, sharing resources, and even securing sponsorship for events that benefit teachers and students

These partnerships broaden the horizons for educators, ensuring Queensland teachers are not working in isolation but are part of a larger movement in digital education.

QSITE’s Impact on Education

Over the years, QSITE has had a profound impact on education in Queensland.

By supporting teachers in their use of ICT, the organisation has played a key role in modernising teaching practices and improving student outcomes. QSITE has helped educators embrace new technologies, from coding and robotics to digital media, and has ensured that technology is being used to its fullest potential in classrooms across the state.

In addition to providing direct support to teachers, QSITE has also influenced broader educational policy and curriculum development.

The organisation has worked closely with state education authorities to ensure that ICT is embedded in the curriculum and that teachers have the training and resources they need to succeed. Its advocacy efforts have ensured that Queensland educators are well-positioned to lead in the digital age, with policies and initiatives that support effective technology integration.
